THE BIG PLASTIC COUNT YOUTH EMPOWERMENT DAY 2024

School pupils pose enthusiastically outside the Houses of Parliament holding placards showing a hand-drawn turtle, The Big Plastic Count logo and the phrase 'Kids Count Too!'.

After the success of our 2022 Youth Empowerment Day, on 17th April 2024, we took 35 pupils from 12 primary schools from as far-flung as York to Bath, and youth representatives from partner organisations, to meet with around to meet with around 50 cross-party MPs in Parliament. MPs included former PM Theresa May, former Environment Secretaries Michael Gove and George Eustice, and current Secretary of State for Transport, Mark Harper.

In the morning, the pupils learnt about how Parliament and the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations work, and they then made a piece of plastic art to give to their MP.

After lunch, they headed to Parliament and let MPs know why cutting plastic production is the only way to solve the plastic waste crisis, asking them to pledge to support a strong global target to cut plastic production.
